Book Review: Daughter of The Killing Fields
Daughter of The Killing Fields Asrei's Story by Theary C. Seng

It is a real life story of a Khmer-American girl and her family during the Khmer Rouge Era. While Seng, also known as Asrei, was still a toddler, she suffered the loss of parents. Her parents disappeared (at different times) and were never to be found again. Apart from grieving over her new identity, orphan, her relatives also suffered under the torturous Khmer soldiers. Her childhood was an unstable one; she led a nomadic life, moving from province to province and country to country. Her haunting experience from the Khmer Rouge Era instilled a thought deeply in her, that is "life is but a breath." Her family was considered few of the lucky ones to find refugee in Thailand and ultimately USA. Smart Asrei then turned into a lawyer and gained more power to help her Cambodian fellows. When given an opportunity to meet one of the perpetuators during the genocide, Khieu Samphan, it was basic human instinct to feel the anger boiling within. Nevertheless, time has caused most of the anger to fade. But an answer to those murderous actions was the most wanted. Yet, the perpetuator claimed not to know of those killings while living luxuriously in capital Phnom Penh. Author Asrei urges for a tribunal to those war crimes.

This book is addicting; it has the capability of keeping me into the nights to read it. At the same time, it can also serve as a history and geography book; giving details of the Khmer Rouge genocide and the various locations of Cambodia's provinces. It shocked me by how the Khmer Rouge managed to revert Phnom Penh to Year Zero by lying to the large population and caused them to evacuate. Communism meant good at the basics, however communists gravely underestimated human nature; laziness and greed.

The author's family was considered one of the wealthier ones in Cambodia before the genocide, judging from the amount of golds, diamonds and other jewels they had. Imagine that their lives were so terrible even when they were rich, what about those poorer ones. I guess the poor suffered even more. The author and family were fortunate to seek refugee in USA which in turn got them educated and returned to help Cambodia struggling away from the Third World Country tag. I anticipated vigorous confrontation with Khieu Samphan in this book (typical KPO!), but the author confronted him in the most intellectual manner; trying to fish out any loopholes in his words. I salute to the author's courage and forgiveness in facing the perpetuator.

Engaging, but read with discretion as biasness involved. (3 stars)

Book Review: Unhurried Thoughts At My Funeral
Unhurried Thoughts At My Funeral by Catherine Lim

a book tt i recently read. i found it rather catchy. Catherine Lim's style of writing has nv failed to amuse her readers i think. she successfully brought many creative insights into her stories.

how she commented on the Singapore Government,
how she effectively brought up traditions to create awareness,
how she utilized her creativity in weaving stories,
at the same time, she infused facts in them.

she is a fun lady i feel.

Unhurried Thoughts At My Funeral narrates a story about her in her coffin; the scenes tat happen during her funeral and the thoughts tat came into her mind while lying in the coffin. this novel covers everything. From friends, relatives, ex-colleagues, fans, lovers, strangers and also God (fictious? no idea.) From science to religion to arts. i'm truely amazed by her extensive knowledge even in Science. she could easily spill out on Black-holes, Big Bang, Parallel Universe, Quantum. she has also included the essence of her classics into tis novel too; giving sweet reminders to her readers. quite sad for me tat she nv include A Leap of Love in. she is fantastic, isn't she? tis book is pretty fun to read, nevertheless it got a bit chim towards e end, as she wrote about god. i had to read twice to grab some points.

one interesting quote from the book:

"Science without religion is lame,
religion without science is blind."
- Einstein

"But science and religion without the arts would be deadly dull"
- Catherine Lim

Worth Reading! 4 stars.

Today's Rumblings
i'm heartbroken. i smashed my trusty old SWATCH on the floor TWICE tis morning as i was spidering to go for usher. first smash... the watch appeared alright. second smash... it wasn't so lucky to be alright le... a small crack at the edge.

i was still thinking a new Swatch and let this old companion guang rong ying tui. now, the crack is a total blemish to its career in service to me. i'm so sorry my dearie Irony. now i truely need to launch a thorough comb on Swatch to secure one and put Irony in museum. went to Swatch outlet in TM today... i couldn't stand those fanciful straps. i'm more conventional. i just want the strap to be simple! i dun need those rings, cubes, accessories. i dun wan those irregular surfaces; like on faces. just conventional strap can have lots of designs on it! SIMPLICITY is all i ask for!

back to work. today is easy money to earn. 6 hours of usher... $42 dollars today. but i spent it. hee.... on good purpose tho. cant tok anything about ushering on blog... anw it wasn't much interesting. wad concerns is that my back seriously hurts from standing. 6 hours of standing on heels. no slouching. no leaning. just 10 mins of sitting. terrible aching now. argh...

'
free-day!
it was a friday ytd... i was too tired to update on my blog. so i do everything now...

i changed into the RETRO style with my new Forever 21 blouse and super ex hairband.

some said i looked like the dutch lady on the carnation milk label.
others said i looked like i from the 60s, 70s and 80s... hello. which is which???

but! the nv-fail-to-irritate-pple QL came shaking my arm and looked at me as if i'm a bacteria tt seriously needs a microscope; her face was sooooo damn close to me. and i HATE it. wah... u today look so fu-gu. wah.... still got put make-up!
damn thing. i usually put on make-up when i'm gg out.

went for dim sum dinner (weird rite...) at Marine Parade. slurp... the dim sum was so nice.
love the phoenix claws (chicken feet).. i supposed it is good for the skin...

went to PP with my qing mei zu ma cousin. so sorry tat i couldn't help to get DP membership, the clothes ain't to my liking. sorry... i nv return home empty-handed from shopping trips... so i got myself a new personalised keychain. kept the design simple cuz i want for long use.... it's genuine leather so hope it can really last.

Breakthrough Day
I've achieved 3 of First Time-s today...

today is the deadline to get my usher's uniform measurement done. so i've took a half-day leave to excuse myself from work. giving excuse tt i'm gg back to skool to make uniform for school function when in fact i'm heading to The Shopping Paradise to make uniform for my moonlighting. muahahah...

....Timeline of My Orchard Escapade....

...1.10pm...

left my office with no backlog at all. my colleague was feeling scared as she has nth to do. hahah... Wah lau eh... the sun ar... exposure to it for 10 mins sure tio cancer loh. lucky me, armed with umbrella to shy away from the Confirm-Tio-Skin-Cancer-Rays. muahahah...

...1.30pm...

yea. it took me full 20 minutes to walk out from the ulu office to the bus-stop to catch bus 518. in order not to look like a sweating pig, i walked damn slow can!!

...1.50pm...

518 took forever to come. worst still, there ain't any empty pair seats, meaning i haf to sit on the outer seats with a stranger. grr.... i prefer inner seats and alone.

...2.30pm...

yeah~~~ reached Far East Plaza. my stomach was growling loudly then. but i went to take the measurements first. the auntie ar... i supposed she tot tt i'm Malay. but i proved her wrong by keep speaking in Mandarin to her. but she kept on speaking in English, but spoke Mandarin to her colleague. jiang hua yu shi fu qi, bie shi qu! HELLO! in the end, she gave me S size for shirt and M size for pants. does tat mean my lower body is bigger than my upper body? In other words, my body is out of proportion?? Duh!!

...2.40pm...

Ta-dah. Checked: my impt task. My First Time eating out in Orchard.... (for Lamer, u will nv nv nv ever ever ever to tat alone. I can challenge u to tt). i ate LJS ALONE. i looked so LONER... the whole LJS is filled with those pubescent kids. and i sat just beside the glass panels, which means every passer-by get to see a loner eating LJS alone. muahahahah... there's nth to be scared of now. and so... i dilly-dally to finish up the plate of Shrimplicious blah blah blah... dunno wad. hee..

...3.00pm...

Another first time: Walk ALONE along bustling Orchard Road (another challenge to my dearest LAMER: shop alone along Orchard). kinda grown out from the Far East Era... the clothes ain't to my liking now... it's solely a place to shop for bags and shoes. nevertheless, some clothes are still quite nice. I saw a cute dress; GRAY-brown in colour, slightly above knee-length, tiny checkered, slight Victorian style, slight resemblance to PREGGY'S CLOTHES. yes! b'cuz of preggy i din buy!

i got into a Cardigan Frenzy. feeling e urge to buy cardigans. anw, i bought a cardigan from G2000 on Mon and it's real bargain! usual price was $43. GSS: discounted 30%. DBS/POSB credit/debit card holders: further 15% off. the the ultimate buying price is SHOCKING $25 nia! wah so happy:) Far East has a shop, Viola specially for selling cardigans. mutiple colours available. having promotion now: first piece selling at usual price. second price is only $7.90. woo~~~ loitered in the shop for very long. wanted to buy one for sis; she loves cardigans, she owns many, countless and bcuz of this i cant rmb which are the colours she still lacks of. IN THE END, i walked out empty-handed. :(

...4.15pm...

left Far East for Tangs. aimed for sth expensive from there. but ain't fantastic.

...4.30pm...

Wisma! and definitely Yong Yuan 21 is my first stop!! I shopped alone in Forever 21... felt lost without kaki for the first time. hahah... if one day i go missing in Vivo or Orchard, find me in Forever 21. spent the most time and $$ there... try and try and try non-stop. IN THE END, i bought a freaking expensive yellow blouse and one freeeeeeaking expensive hair-band. i tink the hair-band can be easily bought in Aries at $2-$3. i bought it for $11. @_@ i must be siao tt time. Spent a total of $69 on those 2 items.

...5.15pm...

at last, i cured my Forever 21 withdrawal. chiong to G2000 hoping to get more good bargains with my proud NUS DEBIT CARD! hahah.... wanted to buy for sis a cardigan she wants. but the outlet in wisma dun have that colour. haix... i wanted to be a good caring sister, ya noe!

...5.30pm...

in another favourite hotspot: ISETAN. hee... I have a confession to make here. Lamer... It's true. I really have a fetish over gray outfits. But i dun understand why. I have the tendency of reaching out the gray wears when i shop. my hands will always land on a gray outift first. i saw another gray PREGGY tt i like. but i ge ai. nv buy. :(

wah... isetan mango having sale!!! but i din go in cuz i'm wearing Mango, din want to feel like i walk out of the place with my purchase on.

...6.00pm...

knock-off time! yes, i knock off from shopping. hop on 518 home and caught a glimpse of the ferris wheel again ;)

i met Pendulum Girl(PG) today. nv seen such a scene for quite some time... this girl was swinging so hard while sleeping. her swing is positively 120 degrees (yes, i calculated). the indian lady sitting inside was so tolerant to her outrageous swinging. Her swing outwards touched a person's bag and her swing inwards landed right on the Indian lady's CHEST. wah lau eh... the pendulum swings were very regular, can fight with Grandpa Clock. her swings even attracted the passengers in front. it's a total shame for a girl to sleep in such unruly, just lacking the saliva. as e driver was turning... SHE FLUNGED OUT FROM HER SEAT AND OFF FROM HER SLUMBERLAND. lucky for her, the agile indian grabbed her hand just in the nick of time and pulled her back to the seat. and it seemed like the proverb "once biten, twice shy" didn't worked on tt PG. not long after, she fell into slumberland AGAIN. wah lau eh... her swingings start all over again. and the indian cont to let PG bumped into her chest (u noe where i mean lah hor!). wah lau eh... yet again. she flew out from her seat but due to a sudden brake this time. and yet again the kind-hearted indian "HOP" PG back to the seat. wah lau eh... cant help but to laugh.

...6.50pm...

Home Sweet Home. ;)

this long post is specially dedicated to wan.wan. pls stop saying i'm a irresponsible blogger can?? in the first place, i dun acknowledge myself as blogger; xx is. and my definition of irresponsible blogger will mean blogging on unneccessary, dry, uninteresting, boring, unexciting, lacklustre, deary posts okie. u wun wan tt rite? Say Yes.

i saw xiao qiang!!!
i made a fool of myself on company's transport today...
I SCREAMED!! yea...
and scared everyone on the bus.

i was seated at the front seat just behind the driver with my sis.
just as we were discussing about the sebum on our faces with another colleague.

i saw XIAO QIANG scuttering passed me.
my natural instinct: SCREAM!

"Eeeee.... Ka Zhua...!!!"

at that moment, my sis's heartbeat skipped a beat. hahah...
everyone peeped their heads out from their seats and looked at me.

DAMN PAI SEI lah....

so we changed our seats.
den pple seated at the rear still dunno what had happened.

I just look like an alien.
